India will complain to WTO that Turkey imposes "illegal" yarn import tariffs

According to New Delhi news, a senior official said that India will soon complain to the WTO that Turkey has imposed "illegal" tariffs on cotton yarn imports. The Ministry of Industry and Commerce of India is consulting with a lawyer on how to sue the dispute settlement mechanism of the WTO.

India stated that Turkey has arbitrarily expanded cotton yarn taxes or increased import tariffs to 12-17%, making Indian textiles less competitive in its sixth-largest export market.

A government official said: "India may soon complain to the dispute settlement mechanism and is currently negotiating with lawyers about the effectiveness of the expansion of the ** tax." Turkey began collecting ** taxes on imported cotton yarn in July 2008.

Therefore, Turkey's tariff on yarn imports increased from 5% to 13%-20%, which is the scope of Turkey's import tax rate or its commitment to the WTO. According to WTO regulations, ** tax can only be collected for three years.

If a country wishes to extend the ** tax period to three years, it will need to pass a review to see whether the country still needs to protect domestic producers and prevent the surge in imports.

The three-year deadline for Turkey ended in August, and Turkey decided to review its procedures for the expansion of taxation, but at the same time impose a 12-17% temporary tariff for 200 days. “Before submitting a complaint to a dispute, it is necessary to hold consultations with the countries that have the wrong.

The Indian official said that we have already done so but did not achieve satisfactory results. Experts said that Turkey's proposal to align with the EU Customs Union has increased the labor costs in the domestic market.

At such a time, India’s exports to Turkey have great potential. Although some other countries, including Indonesia and Peru, are also implementing local protectionism measures to restrict the import of cotton yarn, the Indian industry believes that the prosecution of Turkey will send a message that India will not accept violations of WTO rules.
