As you browse through various fashion blogs or social media platforms, you'll likely come across stunning dresses adorned with dazzling jeweled necklines, much like the one showcased here. While these designer pieces can be quite pricey, I was inspired to recreate a similar look at a fraction of the cost. It not only seemed like a budget-friendly alternative but also presented an exciting creative challenge. To my surprise, this project turned out to be surprisingly straightforward and fast. Not only will you feel proud of your accomplishment, but it might even earn you some "cool mom" points along the way.
When it comes to adding a bold embellishment to a dress, the possibilities are endless. One popular option is the classic BeDazzler tool, which allows you to attach rhinestones and studs effortlessly. This gadget resembles a stapler and has been around for decades. Although the rhinestones are relatively small, requiring numerous pieces to cover a significant area, replacement packs are readily available. Before applying it to your final dress, it’s wise to practice on a scrap piece of fabric to familiarize yourself with the technique.
Alternatively, you can opt for iron-on or sew-on jewels, which come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Whether you're going for a subtle shimmer or a bold statement, these options offer versatility.
For my project, I decided to work with larger, sew-on jewels.
I carefully planned the layout of the jewels on the front bodice pattern piece to ensure symmetry and balance.
After sewing a sleeveless blue dress with box pleats using the Building Block Dress pattern, I gathered my hand sewing needle and coordinating thread. With patience and precision, I hand-sewed the jewels onto the neckline.
And just like that, I transformed a simple dress into a show-stopping party piece!
