Non-contact temperature measurement technology in the glass industry

Since the tact time is very short, it is necessary to use a thermometer with a fast response time, and it is also necessary to be able to measure the internal temperature of the glass drip because the surface temperature of the glass is greatly affected by environmental conditions, so the measured surface temperature may be inaccurate. The penetration depth of the glass is determined by the spectral range of the thermometer, and is determined by the type of glass and the size of the droplets. Normally the temperature is maintained and displayed for a short time by means of the maximum value reservoir.

The ISQ5 digital infrared thermometer is shown with a stainless steel cooling housing that measures the internal temperature of the glass in a fully automated glass bottle production line with a response time of 10 milliseconds.

Glass mold temperature measurement:

Measuring the temperature of the glass mold also requires a fast response time because the glass mold opens and closes at a very fast rate. Because the temperature of the metal object is measured here, the spectral sensitivity of the thermometer should be in the short-wave infrared range, and the response time should be between 1 and 2 milliseconds. In this regard, IMPAC can provide online or portable thermometers, depending on the production process. IGA 5 or IGA120 or portable IGA8 plus (Figure 7) is used online. The temperature range is between 250 – 1300 °C. In order to align the measured object, the thermometer can be equipped with a laser guide light or a telephoto lens. In addition to the 0 – 20 mA or 4-20 mA measured value output, the serial interface (RS232 or RS485) can be selected so that the data can be processed by the computer. The instrument can also choose convenient mounting brackets and cooling covers.

Temperature measurement in flat glass production:

For the temperature measurement of flat glass, we also have a suitable pyrometer with a spectral range of 5 μm, that is to say only the surface temperature of the glass. This measurement method is used in the float bath and cooling zone in the production line of flat glass. As mentioned above, the radiance is very low in this spectral range, so that the radiation of the heat ray actually does not affect the measurement.

IMPAC offers the rugged two-wire digital thermometer IN5/5 or the fully digital IN5/5 plus for this temperature measurement task. In addition to the usual analog outputs (0/4 – 20mA), this model can also be used. The data bus is implemented via a serial interface. Here we can also provide accessories for easy installation and long-term use, such as cooling covers, mounting accessories, air or protective gas cleaners.

Glass reprocessing and bulb production:

Glass surface temperatures are an interesting process parameter in lamp production, sheet glass bending and annealing, and hot-bake forming processes. The temperature measurement here should also be independent of the thickness of the glass, so a pyrometer with a spectral sensitivity of 5 μm should also be used. Using IN5/5 or IN5/5plus here is a good choice. By selecting three different suitable lenses, the measurement spot can be larger or smaller.

If the temperature measurement is required to be particularly fast, such as in a glass bending furnace or a glass bulb production line, the response time of the IE120/51 is only 10 milliseconds. There is also a lens that can be focused to best suit the temperature measurement task.

For special applications of small processing equipment (such as the manufacture of automotive light bulbs), the size of the thermometer itself is small and the measurement spot is small. The IN300/5 is only 25 mm in diameter and 120 mm in length. It is the smallest thermometer with a spectral range of 5.14 μm and a measuring spot of 2.5 mm.
